Ice Wolves fans know Wa-Pi, the gentle 118-pound wolf-dog with striking golden eyes. He lives at Wanagi Wolf Fund and Rescue, a Tijeras sanctuary that rescues wolves and wolf-dogs often abandoned by unprepared owners.
Wanagi’s founder and caretaker, Stephanie Kaylan, leads the nonprofit with humor and deep devotion. She met Wa-Pi after learning of a wolf-dog wandering Wichita in 2020 and says their bond was immediate. Wa-Pi’s Lakota name means “the lucky one” — a title that seems to fit them both.
Kaylan emphasizes that wolves and wolf-dogs are intelligent, social animals that care deeply for their families. Wa-Pi’s appearances at Ice Wolves games help spotlight the rescue’s mission and encourage responsible adoption through sanctuaries rather than breeders.
From rink to refuge, Wa-Pi’s role as mascot helps change lives — one paw at a time.
